Chapter 55

The following weekend she went back to her own kibbutz. He hadn't asked her to stay and didn't know how far he wanted this to go. His ex-girlfriend had asked him about her.
"I guess you could say we're together."
"I'm happy for you."
It was odd to hear this from her but it was genuine. Maybe she had worried about him.
He enjoyed this new girl's company mostly at work. She worked long hours with only a maximum of nine hours between finishing work and starting again. Generally he left her alone during the day.

He went to stay at her place one Friday night, thinking it'd be nice to see another kibbutz. He was a bit nervous about going to the dining room there so she brought him some food from the evening meal. At least she hadn't pushed him about eating with everyone else. He didn't really want to feel all those eyes on him, a stranger.
After they'd eaten she drove them to a movie, a film he'd planned to see for some time: Four Weddings And A Funeral. Around midnight, after the movie had finished, they took a walk, hand in hand, around the grounds of the theatre which bordered the Southern shore of the Kinneret (or Lake Tiberias as tourists called it.)
It was a beautiful evening - calm and warm. Perfect. Just listening to the small waves lapping at the shore. They found an unoccupied bench and seated themselves. She said he looked ill at ease, a bit edgy.
"No. Yes. Er... I can't explain. This has all happened fast. i'm not used to it. I'm sorry."
"Is it because of her?"
"I'm not sure. Could be. I'm very careful now. I don't want to get hurt, y'know. That's why I'm like I am now. She really messed me up and I won't forget that."
"Do you still love her...? You do, don't you?"
"No, not at all," he replied quickly. He wished she hadn't asked. He wasn't really prepared to answer that question although he believe what he'd said.
"Do you still see her? Does she come to your room?"
"Yeh. She's still a good friend, y'know. Just because I'm with you doesn't mean I have to stop talking with her. I don't think that's fair. It bothers you, doesn't it?"
"I just find it a bit strange. When I end a relationship with a guy, I don't see them ever again. They're the past and I carry on with the future."
