Chapter 50

His friend had had a good night too and had got together with one of the kibbutzniks. He was happy for him.
After clearing away all the music equipment and tidying up the dining room he returned to his room feeling really exhausted. He wound down with a coffee, some music and a book to read. He'd just finished the coffee and felt ready for bed when he heard his name being called. He knew the voice but couldn't figure out where it was coming from.
"Where are you?" he asked.
"Out here. Out the back."
He looked out the window and saw her on the path that passed behind his room - a seldom used path with a lot of overgrown foliage around. He stared at her for a moment before asking if she wanted to come in for a coffee. She hesitated before saying yes.
He was curious as to what she was doing there at almost four in the morning. She'd been down to the volunteer rooms to see her boyfriend she told him. She'd enjoyed the disco and wondered if it was possible to do sometime again.
"We'd like to," he answered her.
She finished her coffee and said she was going to get some sleep. She'd just opened the door.
"Can I ask you a question?" he said.
"Yeh, sure."
"Can I kiss you?"
He had no idea where it had come from or why he asked. The feeling was there though.
"I don't think it'd be good for me. I've got a boyfriend."
"Just thought I'd ask. Don't be embarrassed or pissed off."
"No, no. It's OK. I understand."
With that she left. "Bye," he said to her disappearing form. He couldn't believe he'd done that. Still, she hadn't given the sharp reply he'd expected.

The next day he talked to his friend about what he'd done.
"Good for you," had been his answer, "It was a good move."
