She came round later that same day. She didn't mention anything of the previous night so he brought up the
subject himself. He told her what his friend had said and asked, "Is it true?"
"Yes"
He was silent for a few moments, then got up to get a drink. Opening the fridge, he looked inside to see
what delights it could offer. He passed his gaze along the bottom and picked out the bottle of Coke. He then
opened the freezer compartment and pulled out the bottle of ice cold vodka. Mixing the Coke with the vodka, eyes
concentrating on the mix, he said to her, "I knew it was gonna happen." He sat down with his drink, expecting
her to carry on.
"I never planned for this to happen," she replied, almost apologetically, "We didn't plan anything. It just
sort of happened."
"You've been going to his room in the evenings, I've heard that. For how long though?"
He wasn't really angry at the outcome, he'd seen it coming for a long time, just pained because he felt she'd
been hiding it from him for some time. He'd always thought they'd been open with each other and now he'd been taken
from the side like a surprise blow to the ribs. It was a little unexpected but not totally.
"I didn't want to hurt you. Didn't want to say anything in case things didn't work out between me and him."
"Gee, thanks. I'm second best. Bollocks!"
So much for trust. You think it's there but all the time it's hiding under a black cloak. You believe it's
there. But is it really?
"Why?" he asked her, but before she could reply he added, "No, don't tell me. You've lost interest in me. I'm no
longer exciting for you. Is that it?"
"Yeh, part of it. But also other things."
He couldn't get her to elaborate. Things came to a dead halt. Complete silence. Very uncomfortable silence.
Just before she'd come to the room he'd been looking through some photos of themselves taken the previous summer.
With the pictures still in his head he said to her, "Y'know, I really thought it'd work out better this time. It
seemed to be going fine just before I left last August."
"I was only trying to make you happy."
That silenced him. She quietly got up and left.
