Chapter 29

He was taken back to his room where he dumped all his belongings. He and his friend then went to the dining room where they talked, smoked and drank coffee until 7 o'clock after which he took a shower and then climbed into bed to get a little bit of sleep.

By 11 o'clock he was up again, buzzing, feeling a new person, happy to be back. The afternoon was spent sorting all his things out in his new room. Actually it was two well-sized rooms, a small kitchen area and most importantly the shower and toilet inside. Far removed from his old place on the kibbutz with its single room and its shared, outside toilet and shower. How he used to hate going out into the cold just to get to the shower.

He had a thought that she'd come round, but the fact she hadn't didn't phase him as he was busy getting used to the place again. Just before he went up to the special Friday night (Shabbat) meal, he remembered that he'd forgotten to tell her where his new room was. He laughed at himself.

Arriving on a Friday morning meant that most people would be seeing him at the evening meal. He was really nervous about it, knowing what it'd be like - people coming up to him to say "Hi", "Welcome back", "Where've you been?" It happened exactly like that. He briefly explained to them what had happened and what he'd been doing. The nervousness soon disappeared. During the meal he'd spent time looking around for his loved one. She was sitting at the back, out of his gaze.
She came to sit with him after the meal. It felt good sitting there, talking together in full view of everyone, especially after all the time they'd hidden themselves. After some time had passed he invited her back to his room.
