Chapter 24

Spring was in full swing and the mornings were pleasantly warm. After his night shift in the bakery he'd return to his room, pick up a book and sit outside in the rocking chair, hoping to make himself sleepy. He enjoyed the slight tingling sensation he felt as the sun warmed his body. This was definitely the life for him.

Problems with his visa cast everything ahead of him in doubt. He hadn't expected anything like this, especially after being back in the country for only a short period of time. He'd been denied an extension on his tourist visa which meant he'd have to leave pretty soon unless something was arranged.

And while all this was going on, his ex-girlfriend had been coming to see him more and more frequently, and phoning him too. This puzzled him, he couldn't understand why. Maybe she was having problems with the guy she was seeing at the moment, or was that hoping too much? Maybe she just wanted to talk. Maybe she'd heard he might be leaving soon and wanted another chance at being with him before he finally left. Or was it because she missed certain aspects of their time together? Maybe this, maybe that. 'Why bother to figure it out,' he thought. Of course he wouldn't and couldn't say no to her. He'd never really thought about it, but he knew that he needed her. His wish was coming true.

After six long months he finally got to kiss her again - remembering the feeling from many times before, but this time it felt so much better. It seemed so right, like the last piece of a slide puzzle slipping into place. He looked deep into her eyes for the first time in half a year and fell down, down into them as though they were wells of infinite depth. How good it was to hold her again, to let himself go in her company. He knew she didn't love him but he didn't care (or tried not to show it.) Just to be able to be with her made up for it. But would it last?
