Chapter 18

27th Jan
This getting to be fun now. We've started a sweepstake on the times of an attack. Nobody won today as there wasn't any action. Yesterday though, one guy got it almost right. He said 10pm. The warning came at a couple of minutes past. He won a bottle of beer from each of the losers.

30th Jan Down in the bakery, don't even bother wearing masks now. Just treat it as though nothing's happened. Israel's taking backstage in the news now. The other day, the Scud attack wasn't even mentioned on the news - Israel's been hit again, so what?!! The debris of the missiles landed over Arab villages.

Status report:
7th attack. 27th missile fired at Israel. 4 people killed and 195 wounded since start of Gulf War.

I was thinking today how strange that only three weeks ago we wouldn't have thought of taking gas masks to work (if we'd have had them!!) and now who knows when it'll be before there's no need to take them. Not for months that's for sure. Months too, before any new vols turn up.

8th Feb
It's been five days now since the last attack. Are we still at risk? Do we need to take the masks with us to work? These are the questions we ask ourselves. Kids are even decorating their gas mask boxes - bright colours, pictures, names. Maybe it's to let Saddam know that nothing will get them down, they're still happy young kids no matter what. And with the quiet days and nights, people try to get their lives back to normal. But who knows, maybe the siren will send out its warning to the people tonight. We'll never forget that sound.
